Serving you for centuries

Serving you for centuries

Our history through the post

No other postal service has the history we do…

The British Postal Museum & Archive

We have a tradition of service stretching back over 360 years. We are proud of our history, which shows the amazing impact of our business on the lives of people in Britain and around the world. We have a great public service pedigree, with centuries of innovation and industry making our business what it is today.

In March 2004, Royal Mail Group developed an independent charitable trust to manage the heritage of all our companies (Royal Mail, Post Office and Parcelforce Worldwide). The British Postal Museum & Archive (BPMA) is now working to increase public access to our nation’s postal history.

You can visit the BPMA in London to use The Royal Mail Archive – if you’re researching your family history you might find information on ancestors in the postal service. You can also see fascinating objects from our distant (and not-so-distant) past at the BPMA museum store on special open days.

Royal Mail holds a unique and important place in history, and we are delighted to be supporting the BPMA in their work.
